Red Snapper Outlook: Planning for the 2026 Season

Mobile Bay - Mobile, AL

While the calendar currently says February, the most common question we’re getting at the dock is: "When can we catch Red Snapper?" For Gulf Shores, Alabama, the Red Snapper season is the most anticipated event of the year. While the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) typically makes the official announcement in late spring, we are already preparing for a projected start date around Friday, May 22, 2026 (Memorial Day Weekend).

What to Expect for Snapper Fishing in Gulf Shores Last year, we saw a record-breaking season with seven-day-a-week access through much of the summer. For 2026, the local snapper population is reported to be at its healthiest level in over a decade. This means:

High Success Rates: Most gulf shores alabama fishing charters reach their bag limits quickly.

Size: We are seeing larger "keeper" fish on our nearshore reefs and wrecks.

Regulations: The daily bag limit remains two fish per person with a 16-inch minimum length.

February Current Bite: The Snapper Warm-Up Even though the harvest is currently closed, we are catching and releasing plenty of snapper during our gulf shores nearshore fishing charters. This is a great sign for the summer—the fish are stacked on the reefs and ready for the season opener.

In the meantime, we are "filling the box" with Sheepshead and Black Drum, which are in the middle of their peak spring run. If you want the taste of fresh Gulf seafood before May, these are the target species to book for right now.
